“A thought may be compared to a cloud shedding a shower of words. Precisely because thought does not have its automatic counterpart in words, the transition from thought to word leads through meaning. In our speech, there is always the hidden thought, the subtext. Because a direct transition from thought to word is impossible, there have always been laments about the inexpressibility of thought… A thought may be compared to a cloud shedding a shower of words. Precisely because thought does not have its automatic counterpart in words, the transition from thought to word leads through meaning. Experience teaches us that thought does not express itself in words, but rather realises itself in them”

~Vygotsky, Thought and Language

This painting takes inspiration from the work of Soviet psychologist Lev Vygotsky and his ideas which very much preceeded the current day discoveries and understanding of human brain.

Vygotsky's research lifted the veil of the true relationship between consciousness and subconsciousness. The scientist deduced a formula, according to which the sign (word) and its meaning (what is meant by this word) is a very complex construction, where the first part belongs to the consciousness, and the second (lower part) to the subconscious. At the same time, we regularly mistake one for the other when we believe that we are saying what "we think" and think "what we are saying".

Therefore, the human psyche consists of three layers:

  • what we say about what we think
  • what we think
  • what makes us think so
